This article offers three tips you can use to improve your chances of landing a new job. In today’s competitive job market, it pays to learn as much as you can about conducting an effective job search campaign.

Job Search Tip 1: Know What You Want

You’ve heard the saying, “Failing to plan is planning to fail” and the same holds true for a job search. Many people are too general in their job search approach thinking that if they apply for every job out there, they’ll eventually land something. While that may be true, you’re better off targeting a specific type of job and/or industry. If you’ve got experience in that job or industry, then you’re off to the races and you’ll want to ensure that your resume positions you as an expert in your chosen field. If you don’t then you’ll want to address the type of position you’re looking for in the objective statement on your resume.

Job Search Tip 2: Prepare a Targeted Professional Resume

Preparing a targeted professional resume is essential. I liken it to niche marketing. You’re more likely to get called for interviews if you resume is targeted. This can be accomplished by inserting an objective statement into your resume or by creating a professional profile section at the start of your resume that describes the number of year’s experience you have related to that type of work and industry; your educational background and achievements.

Job Search Tip 3: Diversify Your Job Search Methods

You need to diversify your job search methods. If you stick only to searching for jobs through online job boards, you’ll be faced with a lot of competition. Try doing a Google search on companies within your chosen industry and click on the company websites and check their careers section. They may have an advertisement on their website that does not appear on any job boards. Even if they don’t have any advertised positions on their website, you can check to see if there are any names of executives or hiring managers on their website and email them directly with a polite request for an informational interview to discuss any future job possibilities. The point is that there are many ways to skin a cat so just make sure that you are not sticking to only one method of searching for a job.

To be able to know more about job search tips, you must also consider some factors like attending free seminars to help you educate yourself and improve your job search skills and gain competitive edge in today’s job market. The free Philadelphia Job Hunters Education and Networking Event will tackle how to dress for success, how to stay motivated during your job search, job search strategies for the currently employed, tools for recent college graduates, and internet job search strategies.

Make the change with These Helpful Tips!

Have you ever thought, in the midst of you career, why you are no longer are excited to get up and go to work every morning? Could it mean you didn’t give much thought before you starting working in your current career? If the answer to the last question is “yes,” what can you do to get out of a job you don’t love?

If you are cursing your job now may be the time to make a change. Really, it’s never too late to make a career change decision. Short of looking for help from a career coach there are some steps you can take to make an effective career transition.

First, do not think of your career as defined by your job title. This one dimensional approach will normally not be productive in analyzing your method of sourcing your career direction. Your current career is really made up of two factors: one is defined by your job duties, the skills you bring to the job, your knowledge base and your overall abilities. Second to analyze is the career field, what industry do you work?

Since you have decided you need to make a career change, it’s important to realize how to make the change to another career. It’s critical that you know what part of your current job you do not want. Answer the question: is it the industry that is the problem, or just the job, or is it both?

Now here is where many go wrong. They change both their career and the industry. A better option is to change careers by continue to work in the same industry. Of you could change the industry but with the same job.

For example, you enjoy building teams and managing people but it’s at the retail level, with its seasonal and sometimes weekly fluctuations of available hours. So you look for a more stable situation where your management and team building skills can be utilized. You find a comparable position with a large insurance processing claim center.

Or you work in an administrative position in a large medical center. Your lack of a medical related degree, you find, will hold you back later on in your career. You however, enjoy the medical field, so you look for a position with a smaller more personable organization that sells to or consults with the larger medical centers.

Once you’ve roughed out the new career direction, the next step is to research your options. If you find more education is needed, perhaps evening classes at a local college could close the gap. Many times this can be accomplished with a concentrated course of self-study. Don’t forget the valuable option of interviewing a number of people currently working in the desired career. Their answers to your prepared questions will lead you to additional productive study. All designed to draft a resume that will get you noticed, and a job in the new career, new industry or both.

The most difficult step in any career transition is the proper analysis that will give you the desired direction. Recognize that you may have to take an initial pay cut, or make the career transition through a series of employers. However, will detailed planning and some hard work you’ll find the right job where it will be a joy to go into work each morning.

From time to time, we can all use some good career advice, and new graduates in particular often need some guidance to get them started on the right career path, and to land that all-important first job.

The job market these days is tight, and many Americans are feeling the pinch. New graduates, especially, can feel a bit overwhelmed as they head out into the “real world” looking for that dream job, only to find that there are more closed doors that open these days.

With this in mind, we will present some of the best career advice for both recent graduates and seasoned workers, the goal of which is to help you land a great job.

Tip number 1 — Be your own career coach.

If you’re tired of filling out endless applications and constantly checking the job web sites, one great tip is to look at your situation from the outside. In other words, see yourself as the applicant and be your own career coach. From this outside perspective, give yourself your best advice on how to land a job.

Getting outside yourself in this way will often show you the weak spots in your résumé, credentials or appearance, and provide you with clues on how to accentuate the positive in your situation.

Tip number 2 — Don’t dress for the job you are interviewing for; dress for the job you eventually want to have.

If you are applying for a job in the mailroom of a large corporation, but your actual goal is to be in upper management, don’t show up wearing khakis and a short sleeve shirt. Even after you have secured a job, one of the most important rules of business success is “never dress for the job you have; dress for the job you want.”

This may seem pretentious, or it could even make you feel that you stand out in a way that is uncomfortable, however, the more you stand out, the more likely it is that you will be noticed by higher-ups at the company. Whether we like it or not, the world we live in judges all of us by appearances. Take advantage of this fact by presenting yourself as neatly and professionally as possible, and always — and I mean always — dress above your current position.

Tip number 3 — If you cannot land at your dream job, take a lesser job and turn it into your dream job.

When the job market is really tight, sometimes it may be necessary to take a job that you feel is beneath your qualifications. If this should happen, it is important that you do not get despondent about it, but rather see this job as an important step toward a better career overall.

It is also important to remain flexible, because the career path you outline for yourself at age 20 may not make a whole lot of sense to you at age 26, for example. Some of the best career advice you can get is this — work hard and give your all to any company and any position you find yourself employed in.

To write a winning resume, the key approach is to “build” the document from the ground up. The foundation of successful resume writing is to do your homework and preparation before you start the first sentence. Building the proper foundation will save time later on in the writing stage. Many resume writing experts contend that the time spent in the preparation stage many times is equal or greater than the actual time spent writing the resume itself. Dates of employment, names and addresses of former employers, titles of positions held, dates of promotions, dates and times of seminars and workshops attended, titles and dates of published articles are all important information to get right.

A professionally written resume might be just what you need. On the other hand, perhaps you can easily write your own resume using a resume template or commercially available resume writing software. How do you decide which is right for you? You may include in your options seeking the help of those who offer resume writing services or career coaching. With this, you may consider the factor, what makes a resume writer professional. There are several well known professional resume writing organizations through which individuals can attain professional resume writing credentials. These include the National Resume Writers’ Association (NRWA) and the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches (PARW/CC). Individuals who attain accreditation from these organizations have demonstrated an in depth knowledge of the resume writing process.

Another is, what are the benefits of hiring these professional resume writers? There are many resume writes out there. You’ll likely save time and almost certainly money in the long run. You’ll avoid making one or more of the common resume writing mistakes that so many people make when writing their own resumes. You’ll enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing your resume was “done right” from the beginning. You’ll be able to devote more time to doing all the other things required of you when looking for a new job. And you’ll have someone in your court who has your best career interests at heart.

Always remember that the goal of the resume is to convey the professionalism of the candidate. By using a resume writing service, you can feel more confident that your work history will be translated into the most desirable and appealing terms possible.

Temp jobs exist everywhere ?at the fast food joint just down the street, in another part of the world or across town. Just about all companies have temp jobs. Home workers can also work at temporary jobs and never have to leave the house if they have a telecommuting job. Most students work in temporary jobs while they are still in high school and college to give them extra spending money. In fact many students actually pay their way through college in this way.

If you are short of cash or if you can find job in your field of expertise or even if you are retired and just want something to occupy your time, there are temporary jobs you can apply for. You just have to look for them.

At one time, temporary work was only available ion seasonal industries, such as fishing and farming and in the world of secretaries and receptionists. Today, however, this type of work exists in virtually every industry and every type of job you can name. Teachers, for example, often work as supply teachers, filling in for permanent teachers when they are on sick leave or attending conferences.

Doctors work as temps to fill in for doctors in various locations for short periods of time. Working as a temp gives you the flexibility to choose when you want to work and the location. In most cases, you can choose your own hours and decline offers of work when you just want to take some time off.

Temporary jobs are very beneficial for those who need to spend more time with their families. They are also great ways for college graduates to gain the experience they need to place on their resumes when they have a temporary job in their field. They also have a suitable reference for potential employers to check.

If you are considering working in a certain area and would like to have some idea of what this type of job entails, then working temporarily in the field or in a particular environment will give you the information you seek.

If you are trying to work your way up the corporate ladder, then a temporary job would not be a good choice for you. However, if you would like to get your foot in the door with a specific company with the hope of obtaining full time or permanent employment with a firm, then working as a temp is a great way to make yourself known to those who do the hiring.

Many companies hire temporary workers to see how they work out before they offer them a permanent job. If you do well in the position, then you are well poised to move up in the company.

There are many temp agencies that recruit workers for a variety of jobs. In these cases, these agencies pay your salary and not the company that you work for. If you want a job in which you will be a direct employee of the company, then you should look for ads placed in newspapers and online.

If you think, “it’s just an interview for a temp job — no big deal,” that’s where you’re mistaken. Some wonderful opportunities, networking connections and careers have resulted from temporary positions.

pTemporary assignments today run the gamut from receptionist to CEO and beyond. And since an agency is usually the first contact with the company, much of the marketing and negotiations have been done for you.

And if you believe “but the interview is set up and all I have to do is show up,” you’re wrong again. The mindset you bring to that interview will make a big difference as to whether or not you get the job.

Most employers like to conduct interviews for temporary positions, even though they are slated only for a few weeks or months of service. They are particularly concerned about people in positions of higher responsibility. The employer is interested in selecting quality people who can be trusted with company information, knowledge and secrets.

Preparing for the Interview

Do Your Research: Many companies have Web sites where you can access valuable background information to use in your interview. By finding out information about the company, like annual revenue and the organization’s mission, you will show an interest in what you will be contracted to do. Showing some enthusiasm about the position will demonstrate a positive attitude toward the assignment that you’re seeking. You don’t want to project the idea that you are there because you can’t find a job anywhere else, or are waiting for just the right job — even if that is the case.

Get a Job Description: Prepare ahead of time. A worthwhile exercise is to take a piece of paper and fold it down the middle. On one side of the fold write, “What they are looking for,” and on the other side, write, “What I have to offer.” Look at the job description and compare the company’s needs with your experience and qualities. How do you stack up? Where are your shortcomings? Can you show how you learn quickly or bring added value to the company from the start?

Prepare a Short Information Statement: Be ready to answer the dreaded question, “Tell me about yourself and your background.” Your statement should include some information on the type of companies and industries you have worked for, your strengths, your transferable skills and some of your personal traits. Practice saying this statement until it is natural.

Be Prepared to Talk About Your Successes and Experiences: The employer will want to find out about your past experience — successes and failures, your work ethic, your track record and, more than likely, the reason you have chosen to work as a temporary employee rather than a regular employee. Make sure you have an answer to the question, “Why temporary employment?”

Even though you are not being considered for a regular position at this time, there is always the possibility that it just might work out well for both parties — and the first step to making that happen is by acing the interview.

The positives of temp work apply almost equally to the employer and the employee. Each normally fulfills a specific need with the minimum amount of unnecessary effort.

The positives of temp work apply to both the employer and the employee. Each normally has a specific need and temp work is often the best way to meet it. The worker who seeks Temp work, many times, has some issues that make full time work impossible at the current time. This is not always the case, of course, but a great many temp employees are dealing with scheduling problems that make temp work the ideal situation. There are many reasons for these scheduling problems. Some examples are schooling and family commitments.

Temp work is ideal for students seeking work in summers or vacation periods. It is also a good deal for a mother with smaller children seeking some extra income without a full time commitment. Other workers hold full time jobs already and look to temp work as a part time supplement to their income. Whatever the individual situation, the ability to work and earn without making a full time commitment to the employer is an advantage of Temp work to many people.

For those seeking full time employment, the temp work job might very well be a chance to get their foot in the door and show what they can do. It also gives the employee a chance to evaluate the company and the work environment prior to making a commitment. This idea of evaluation is very important to both sides in the Temp work business. The hiring process is sometimes long and involved. Once an employee is hired, leaving a company after a few months because of dissatisfaction will not look good on a resume. The temp position avoids this.

The employer benefits from this idea of evaluation as well. The amount of time and money spend in the hiring process as well as the training and employee benefits given to a new hire make having a chance to evaluate the work performance of an applicant very desirable. Many firms use temp Agencies to act as out sourced personnel departments providing prescreened applicants to evaluate on the job.

Of course, the other advantage to the employer is the ability to meet specific short term needs. Not all companies are seeking new employees in temp assignments. Very often the need is truly temporary. This might be due to an employee illness or extended leave of absence. Also, certain projects sometimes require additional manpower on a temporary basis.
